The teardown tells you how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G/Z Flip3 5G is IPX8 waterproof.
August 13 In the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this week, Samsung launched its latest foldable smartphones-Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.
Both phones use a stronger Armor aluminum frame, a better foldable display protective film, and IPX8 waterproof certification.
First of all, Samsung has developed a “special lubricant” for hinges that “adheres very well to all small parts in the device.” This lubricant protects all components in the hinge from corrosion. For foldable displays, Samsung uses pressure-sensitive adhesive to seal them. With these two measures, even if water enters the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G or Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, it will flow between the screen and the two parts of the phone without causing any damage.

In addition, Samsung has also developed a thick double-sided tape to seal all the openings in the folding part, which allows the screen to move slightly when folded and unfolded while preventing water from entering the part.

Finally, in order to prevent the lines connecting the two parts of the mobile phone from being corroded by water, Samsung uses “cured in place gaskets.” These gaskets are more flexible than ordinary rubber gaskets, allowing the line to move more greatly, and at the same time, making the line waterproof.
However, it is said that these waterproof designs will make Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G more difficult to repair, which is also the price to pay for IPX8 waterproofing.
