This new gaming handheld computer combines Android and Switch style design
GPD is one of the most famous manufacturers in the field of handheld computers, providing a variety of game-centric handheld computers running Android or Windows. We haven’t seen Android devices for a while, dating back to GPD XD Plus, in 2018, but it looks like the company is preparing to launch new handheld devices in this regard.
This new gaming handheld computer combines Android and Switch style design.
The company confirmed on Twitter that it is preparing GPD XP and pointed out that it is an Android-based handheld device and shared images (see picture above). More pictures and hypothetical specifications are from the GPD Discord channel (h/t: XDA-Developers).
The new handheld computer avoids the DS-style clamshell design of the previous device and instead adopts a shape similar to the Nintendo Switch. However, the left-hand controller seems to be non-detachable, while the right-hand controller (with four face buttons, shoulder triggers, and an analog joystick) can indeed be replaced with another gamepad.
Otherwise, GPD XP should run a Mediatek Helio G95 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage space, and a 7,000mAh battery. We do not have detailed information on the screen, but if the previous device can continue to be used, we guess that this is an LCD panel.
In any case, these specifications should theoretically be enough to run all PSP simulations at a very smooth speed, although we hope that some GameCube games can also run here.
A potential concern is that GPD will not provide too many firmware upgrades for new handheld devices. For example, GPD XD Plus was launched with Android 7.0 and has not yet received a major version update. Therefore, those who value software support may want to stick to mobile phones and gamepads.
There is no news about pricing or availability, but the retail price of GPD XD Plus is slightly less than $250. We guess that the price of GPD XP will be higher, but only time will tell. Either way, between Valve’s Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch OLED, we have a lot of handheld gaming options.
