MediaTek dominates the chipset market in the second quarter of 2021
Research shows that Counterpoint Research has just released a quarterly analysis of the smartphone chipset market, and MediaTek performed well in the last quarter. MediaTek sold 43% of all chipsets on the market, while Qualcomm ranked second with 24%, and Apple ranked third with 14% market share.
This Taiwanese company has achieved the largest market share ever. Counterpoint Research Director Dale Gai revealed that this might be due to a “competitive 5G product portfolio in the low-end market and no major supply restrictions.” Compared with Qualcomm, MediaTek also benefits from fewer problems, including RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit), power management IC, and TSMC’s stable production yield. 4G chip shipments have further helped MediaTek consolidate its market position.
However, in 5G baseband shipments, Qualcomm dominates the 5G baseband market with a 55% share. The boost came from Apple’s iPhone 12 series, which helped the company dominate the market. The demand for Snapdragon 8 series and 4 series is also very strong. If TSMC has no production problems, shipments may be higher. Qualcomm will be the second in 2021. Achieve diversification of chipset production quarterly; however, these results may only be visible in the next quarter and in the future.
Apple eventually ranked third with a 14% market share, while Samsung dropped 5%, and HiSilicon eventually became the biggest loser in the chip market competition because its market share fell from 16% to 3%. Huawei produces HiSilicon chips, and the law does not allow the company to produce more such chips. It is said that its inventory is also very low, with almost no SoC inventory. Therefore, despite strict legal restrictions, the Huawei P50 series launched the Snapdragon 888 chipset, and the equipment is limited to 4G.
