OnePlus was recently accused of restricting apps, and the company has just admitted that these allegations are true. The company does believe that there are good reasons for doing so.
After testing the OnePlus 9 Pro, Anandtech found that OnePlus was restricting applications. The company responded that this is done to obtain better performance, thereby benefiting users.
OnePlus admitted to restricting apps, revealing why it did so
OnePlus said it received some user feedback after the release of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. Users demand better battery life, heat management, and ultimately… performance.
The company said its research and development team is working hard to optimize the performance of the OnePlus 9 series when using many popular applications, including Chrome. It means that the mobile phone matches the processor requirements of the application with the most suitable power.
OnePlus said this “helps provide a smooth experience while reducing power consumption.” OnePlus said that this might affect the phone’s performance in some benchmark applications, but if it means that users can get better performance, then the price to pay is small.
Many applications are affected by this.
This is a valid explanation from OnePlus, although the survey results are still surprising. Many of you may still be troubled by this because of the long list of restricted applications. Affected applications include Chrome, Firefox, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Zoom, WhatsApp, TikTok, Amazon, Dropbox, Google’s native applications, etc.
OnePlus 9 Pro handles some of these applications very actively, such as Chrome. Chrome on the OnePlus 9 Pro “shows as a low-end budget device in terms of speed.” It ranks lower than Pixel 5.
As mentioned earlier, this may bother you, but on the other hand, if you don’t notice the difference in performance… why bother you? If it means better device performance, better battery life, and better power consumption, may it be worth it? Of course, everyone’s opinion will be different.
