Samsung Eco² OLED panel debuts on Galaxy Z Fold 3

Samsung announced its new Galaxy Z Fold 3 earlier this month. Samsung’s latest flagship device has a 120Hz refresh rate screen, Snapdragon 888 chipset, Samsung’s first under-screen camera, S-Pen support, and more. The company revealed more information about the OLED display panel used in the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Traditionally, an OLED screen consists of the main OLED panel, the polarizer in the middle, and the glass covering the top. Samsung’s previous-generation Z Fold 2 consists of these three layers, but Samsung used an ultra-thin glass panel instead of a thick glass cover.

In these three components, the polarizer is used to counteract the light reflection. But to reduce light reflection, the polarizer will block a large amount of light from the OLED panel, thereby reducing the panel’s efficiency by half. This is the main cause of “aging” in OLED.

Samsung said that Z Fold 3 uses the new Eco² OLED display. This new display technology has a new laminate structure that can reduce only the light reflection from the OLED layer. The new technology no longer needs the polarizing layer and can abolish it, making OLED panels thinner and more energy-efficient.

Samsung claims that the new OLED display is 25% more energy efficient than the previous generation OLED panel. It allows more light to pass through, enabling Samsung’s first-ever under-display camera.

The only disadvantage of the new technology is the increased complexity of its production. Due to increased manufacturing complexity, Samsung failed to introduce this technology in its Z Flip 3, which still uses Super AMOLED displays.
